The visitors continued to enjoy most of the possession in the second half though, and it took just five minutes for them to go 2-0 up.
Joey Abbs delivered a dangerous cross, and with pressure from two Newmarket attackers running into the area, a Walden defender could only put the ball into his own net.
Newmarket keeper George Lawton was called into action to keep out a superb shot from 30 yards as Newmarket kept the hosts at bay for a morale-boosting win.
“I’m very pleased, we defended really well,” said Newmarket boss Kevin Grainger.
“We didn’t create a lot but we dug and kept our shape.
“We broke up everything they threw at us.”
