End of an Era and Club Changes

Newmarket Town Football Club are sad but excited to announce changes within the club.

The First change and unfortunately due to ill health sees John Olive step down from his role as Chairman. The club can not thank him enough for his leadership over the years, taking over as Chairman in 2009 with the club still financially struggling he has been key in turning things around. Leading the committee with all the new changes to the ground in recent years including the fantastic 3G and he leaves the club in a far better place on and off the field.

Everyone at the club would like to wish John all the best for the future and hope his health improves, he has already said he will be around for games whenever possible.

The second is the change of role for First Team Manager Kevin Grainger who comments.

“I would like to inform everyone that after Saturday’s game at home vs Walsham le Willows I will be stepping down as First Team Manager, this is to take up the position of Chairman at the club due to the ill health of John Olive.

It has been great times, especially the last five years with two cup finals and a Suffolk Cup semi-final. Finishing 9th, 6th and 3rd last year in the league have been highlights for me.

I have had great support from the Chairman, committee and staff at the club and would like to thank them all, it also goes without saying that without the players I wouldn’t have had the success neither and they have been fantastic and a privilege to manage.

At the club with the changes and new pitch it has now become a seven day a week operation and along with the committee we move forward.”

It has been great times for the club with Kevin as First Team manager reaching two League Challenge Cup finals, winning the first one in the club’s history in 2014.

Last season 2016/17 saw the clubs most successful season on the pitch in its history, Runners up in the League Challenge Cup Final, a Suffolk Premier Cup Semi Final and a third placed finish in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division (equalling the highest league position for the club).

The club would like to thank Kevin for all his work over the years as first team manager, taking over in September 2009 to lead the team he is “Mr Newmarket” and no one more fitting to fill the shoes as the new club Chairman than Kevin himself.

The Third and final change to the infrastructure sees the club install a new First Team Manager and stepping up into that role is Michael Shinn. Having joined the club as Assistant to Kevin in October 2017 he will now lead the team on the pitch, a man with great experience as a player and as a manager at this level previously with Haverhill Rovers.

New Chairman Kevin Grainger say’s “I will endeavour to give Michael my full support as we look to move the club onto the next level.”

Everyone at the club wishes him all the best and every success for the future.
